Background

Barnsley MBC was created in 1974 when 14 smaller urban & rural district councils were amalgamated. It is responsible for the full range of local government services, excluding Fire & Rescue Services; Local Government Pension Scheme; Police & Passenger Transport, which are each managed by a separate authority.

Barnsley MBC is also the main employer in the Borough. As at 31st December 2008, the Council employed 12,229 people (including in schools).
