Here in Barnsley we recognise that strong partnership working is key for improving the health and well-being of the people of our area, and as such we are jointly committed to fully integrating services to ensure that we deliver better health outcomes for all of our citizens. For this reason we were one of the first places in the country to establish a joint appointment of this nature in 2003.

Health in Barnsley is certainly improving, but is still significantly worse than many other areas in the UK and tackling health inequalities sits at the very heart of the strategy to regenerate Barnsley and its surrounding villages. A regenerated Barnsley is nothing without healthy citizens who have the ability to achieve their full potential.

We have an ambitious agenda, and this joint public health role calls for pro-active engagement with external partners to attract more investment, and find more creative solutions to the challenges we face as one of the most deprived areas in the country. We’re confident about our future and now we’re looking for a visionary and inspirational person to help us realise our ambitions.

We’re looking for someone who can operate successfully within both the health service and local government. Someone who will work with the community to tap into their knowledge, ideas and creativity and who will be equally at home working with Universities to attract funding for research. Above all we require a person who can help shape our services and health improvement programmes and initiatives, to ensure that our people achieve the health outcomes they deserve, in a way that responds directly to their needs. Above all we are seeking someone who can make things happen, someone who can capture people’s imagination, with the tenacity to see things through and deliver positive and practical outcomes for all of our community.
