Remaking Barnsley
Barnsley is undergoing a programme of innovative developments to transform it into a 21st Century Market Town. Ambitious plans and a £380 million budget are behind this urban centre transformation.
The Barnsley of thirty years time will be unrecognisable from the town we know today. And over the next few years there will be gradual changes in the way the town develops, beginning with how it looks.
All these changes won’t be made simply for the sake of it. They have to happen if Barnsley is to have a future. “Rethinking Barnsley” was simply the beginning: the catalyst for a better town and a better way of life. The goal is to make the town a desirable place to live and work, to shop and visit. Barnsley will be the ideal 21st Century Market Town – a modern community that provides employment, culture, the arts, accommodation, leisure, retail and a place to relax, all focused in its town centre.
Inside the boundaries of the town centre will be the modern equivalent of a thriving community, capable of supplying everything it needs in terms of power, food, economy and workforce.
